Formerly, there were extensive salt marshes on the western and southern sides of the bay. Traditionally, the Algonquin who lived around Little Neck Bay when Europeans came was considered to be from a tribe known as the Matinecock. One could find the Saddle-rock oysters here. However, in 1909, the bay was closed for harvesting due to pollution. There is an old Matinecock cemetery that remains in Little Neck on Northern Boulevard between Cornell Lane and Jesse Court.
