New Hyde Park, whose motto is “A Great Place to Live,” has become a vibrant community with successful people from many different backgrounds. In addition to how New Hyde Park truly is a great place to live today, there is also a fascinating story of its origins. If you live in New Hyde Park, your Zip code is going to be 11040, 11041, 11042, 11043, 11044, or 11099.

Much like nearby areas of Long Island, New Hyde Park was first settled by Dutch and English explorers in the 17th century. At the time, it was home to Thomas Dongan, the royal governor of New York, and the area was known as “Donegan’s Farm.” However, his estate was later sold to George Clarke, Secretary of the Province of New York. Clarke changed the name to “Hyde Park” in honor of his wife, Anne Hyde. The area eventually became home to many farms, and it was decided to open a post office station in the 19th century in the community. The village was renamed “New Hyde Park” to differentiate it from the town near Poughkeepsie, New York called Hyde Park. When transportation evolved in the 20th century, New Hyde Park became a residential area for commuters who worked in Manhattan.
